Announcement: Thanks for the memories…RTDS is off air for the foreseeable future…

we're closedDue to impending royalty rate hikes for the period 2016-2021, we have been forced to shut down.  We are a minor non-interactive music discovery service/internet radio service, and are being forced to pay the same rates as some of the largest internet streaming services.  They have millions of subscribers who pay $10 per month.  This is not, at the moment, a valid business model for us.  We feature quite a lot of new independent music, as well as lesser known tracks from more established artists. We do this because we want to be a valid destination for people with discriminating taste, and we want to give these artists a place to feature their music, as we all know terrestrial music rarely features new unsigned music.

We are NOT against artists being paid for their creative works, as many of us that work at RTDS are recording artists as well.  We ARE for a fair and balanced system that pays creators but also reflects the realities of the many micro and small broadcasters that are presenting options that are NOT hit based radio.

We will be silent until we can find a way to find funding to pay these increased royalties, or until the system is re-evaluated.

If you want more information on the consequences of removing choice, Live365.com closed its doors this week, as they had thousands of stations that would be affected by these new royalties.  Many of these stations are small broadcasters who feature many types of music NOT featured on traditional radio and will now go silent.  Far few choices to listen to…very sad.

Announcement: Blog – #Vinyl Revenue Higher Than Online Streaming

vinyl-record-playerBlog – #Vinyl Revenue Higher Than Online Streaming

In my latest ‪#‎blog‬ post, I look at the ‪#‎vinyl‬ resurgence and why artists, even indie artists, really should think about adding vinyl to their product release strategy. And we talk hard numbers, not fanciful thinking…vinyl is growing faster than THREE streaming services COMBINED, so perhaps it’s time to get some vinyl pressed!

So, who honestly saw THIS coming?  That in 2015 artists would see MORE revenue from vinyl sales than the combined income from THREE major streaming portals?  Whaaaaat year is it again, and what does it mean for artists?

What it means is that you *should* diversify your media delivery to include vinyl records.  Why?  For more reasons than you might know.

What market other than vinyl can you say is growing so rapidly in the music industry?  With purchases of Vinyl up 52 percent from this time last year, no other format is growing at such a rapid rate.  So, it’s becoming harder and harder to ignore that vinyl, for the time being and foreseeable future, should factor into your product release strategy.  From the article:

“In a pop-culture world dominated by streaming and pick-and-choose musical singles, it is interesting to see long form records making such a strong comeback, pointing to what some might consider to be a larger cultural shift.

The modern music consumer, when purchasing physical music, seems to prefer the larger images, exclusive content, and often free digital downloads that come with a vinyl buy. More and more bands are printing special singles, colored vinyl, and other cool content for analog fans.”

warren zevonThis week’s show appearing on www.RTDS.ca is the long awaited MORTALITY show in which Michael Tearson plays music from albums and sessions artists did knowing it would be their final work. The idea started with Warren Zevon, George Harrison and Jesse Winchester and grew to include Freddie Mercury, Mick Ronson, Steve Goodman, John Hartford, Eric Lowen of Lowen & Navarro, The Singing Brakeman Jimmie Rodgers in 1933, Townes Van Zandt, Dan Fogelberg, Pops Staples of the Staple Singers and a couple more. Instead of 60-70 minutes this one’s a double length show of 140 minutes. It really became a show MT is am most proud of.

8P ET/PT FRIDAY, 10A ET/PT SUNDAY, THE VINYL VAULT ON AIR! VINYL, CLASSICS, RARITIES AND MORE ON CKAV!

Yep, The Vinyl Vault is back from hiatus!  The show will be produced at the RTDS studios but now air twice weekly on two very fine FM stations, in Toronto and Vancouver.  CKAV FM air in Toronto at 106.5 and in Vancouver at 106.3, Fridays at 8p local time, with a repeat at 10a Sunday.

The world needs more radio shows about vinyl, or at least we think so. It’s like a 1 hour vacation from reality!

On The Vinyl Vault, Todd Miller (Don River) plays songs from vinyl from the vinyl era, as well as newer tracks that bump up along them nicely. We play hits, B sides, one hit wonders, rarities and lost classics, interviews and perhaps some stuff we should *never* play again 🙂

Join us for an hour weekly of great music and interviews with music stars of yesterday and today.

If you’d like to make a request there are two ways to do that:

  • email ==> feedback AT radiothatdoesntsuck.com, OR
  • 1-866-269-6155 Ext. 4 for our voicemail line.

Digging deep into our vinyl library, and those of our friends, you can expect to hear songs heard very few other places, as well as enough familiar stuff to keep you tuned in 🙂

If you’d like to sponsor or advertise on The Vinyl Vault, drop us a line for our rate card…you can’t beat it!

Sticky: Alan Parsons enters The Vinyl Vault this Thursday to talk touring, music and life!

todd and alan parsonsAlan Parsons enters The Vinyl Vault this Thursday to talk #touring, #music and #life!

We last caught up with Alan just before his whirlwind visit to Toronto in May of 2012, as the Art and Science of Sound Masterclass Training Session took over Noble Street Studios to record the David Barrett Trio, plus vocalist Paul Reid in a marathon 12 hour session!

Alan and the Alan Parsons Live Project are hitting the road for some selected North American dates before heading off to Europe!  The APP live project rolls into the Oakville Centre For The Performing Arts on March 13th and 14th.  His tour starts Jan 28th and continues into March.  Head over to www.AlanParsonsMusic.com for all the tour dates, as well as order yourself a copy of The Art and Science Of Sound – The Book.  Recently written by Alan and Julian Colbeck, it takes the ASS DVD series to the next level, providing greater details and depth than can be provided on video. ARt the book

Alan also gave us a sneak peek at the soon to be released “Fragile” 7″ #vinyl record single!  See the screen caps below.
